Mehman Nawazi Of Rander

Mehman Nawazi

Today we decided to explore the long-lost gem- Rander. I have been in Surat for the past 20 years, but this part of Surat was unknown and untouched by me despite its proximity to our school. We explored and visited the various beautiful heritage sites and charming architecture of Rander. The history of Surat and the stories associated with it brought history alive. It felt like we went back in time. The Jain and the Muslim community living together with many temples and mosques next to each other showed us how the people here lived peacefully and happily together despite what is otherwise believed to be the case.

The people here were so generous and welcoming, including ‘Abbas bhai’ who from his busy schedule gave us almost 4 hours to help us explore the place. He was polite, soft spoken, smiling and sharing with us all the knowledge about the place. Taking extra efforts to get permissions for places which were otherwise out of reach for us.

After all the walking, we were not just ready but really hungry for the aloo puri and khawsa that we were here for. So the next stop for us was ‘Nakhuda Nasta center’. The place was brimming with aroma and enticed our tastes buds and we were welcomed here with a warm smile. We were first shown the process of how they make these iconic dishes. He took us to the kitchen, showed the making and answered all the questions. Someone revealing their business secret is something I saw for the first time.

And finally we ordered everything they had on the menu- Aane do!- alu puri, cheese aloo puri, egg aloo puri, chicken aloo puri, rainbow aloo puri, veg khawsa, chicken khawsa, egg khawsa! After eating to our hearts content we wanted to drink something. He was really kind to get us drinks from another shop. This seemed like a local fav- RimZim which was really refreshing and reminded us of our childhood days. Next on our list was hand churned ice cream! And not just one flavor, Abbasbhai got us 12 different flavors! When the plates arrived on our tables we were all love struck- the colors and creaminess..After eating so much we were pretty sure we won’t be able to finish it but when we looked around after 10 mins all the plates were licked clean!

“Atithi Devo Bhava “

Something I have only heard since I was a child, I experienced today.

This Mehman Nawazi of Rander blew our minds and made the humble experience of eating aloo puri and khawsa into an unforgettable memory. In Rander you get not just good food but also truly authentic human beings!
This is the end of the story

Emotional Intelligence – “Why we need it now, more than never”

https://images.app.goo.gl/q5rdkLubgi4oQv7h6

While it’s easy to think Emotional Intelligence or EQ as it’s commonly referred to by the term Emotional Quotient) is all about mushy feelings, it’s an idea born from psychological research and now strengthened by neuroscience.

It is an awareness of your own emotions and your ability to use that awareness in life situations.

Well, the question is how do we understand ourselves? And how do we use that knowledge to succeed in the world around us?

These questions have been answered in this Life class.

An emotionally intelligent person is aware of the influence emotions have on people, acts accordingly, and consequently has more successful relationships all around.

Drawing on the work of Daniel Goleman, below are five pillars of emotional intelligence

  • Self-awareness
  • Self-regulation
  • Self-motivation
  • Empathy
  • Social skills

Although emotional intelligence seems to come naturally to some, our brain’s plasticity means we can increase our emotional intelligence if we’re willing to put in the work.

Here I would like to share my learning from the “Happiness Program” on the ways to boost our Emotional Intelligence skills that I could connect with these sessions.

  • Listen to others
  • Exude positivity and kindness
  • Take responsibility for your actions
  • Develop self-awareness
  • Connect with breath and emotions (Meditate)
  • Empathize

The more regular we are and the more we sustain our practice, the easier it will be to dive deeper within to find our inner strength, our sense of self-esteem, a sense of creativity, and our inborn intuitive ability – and that translates into Emotional Intelligence.

Emotions.. Emotions.. Emotions

The journey till now has been very insightful. I understand stood how I can be emotionally intelligent. We discussed about the first three stages in the span of four days which were self awareness, self regulation and motivation. I was able to gauge a better understanding of how important it is to be aware about our own emotions as well as others, regulate it aptly according to the situation and be motivated to work towards the greater good. There were a lot of activities done like journaling, ikigai, finding our pleasure, passion and purpose and watching Ratatouille movie.

Growing through Learning

As rightly quoted “You have to expect things from yourself before you can do them”.

Emotional intelligence is all about learning about 5 major Domain that is self awareness, Self regulation, Motivation, Empathy and Social skills.

Through the process of Scaffolding, we are learning each Domain and understanding how to expect from oneself in order to implement it.

How small gestures of Mindful listening, Mindful Talking, Being Mindful for your action can help you balance relationship at personal and professional level.

Happy Learning!

Emotional Intellegence

Emotional Intelligence

I had just heard the terminology of emotional intelligence before the start of this life class, but now I realize after attending four sessions how important it is in my professional as well as personal life, and how this skill is very much required in today’s VUCA world. What are the three types of happiness and how pleasure, passion and purpose are very much interdependent and how these forms are of happiness are related to motivation and what are the three steps process of motivation, how I have to align my work with the values I possess, what are the values the famous personalities used to possess, and how resilience is going to help to overcome from the failure.

Emotional intelligence

We all have some or other emotions at every moment and so our actions are accordingly. I can control my emotions and think before showing any emotions but was not aware the terms such as Self-awareness and Self -regulations. In this life class I have learnt many new terms and strategies to live a happy life.

We are living in VUCA world.(volatility, uncertainty, complexity and Ambiguity) where we face unexpected challenges. So we have to prepare for it and for this EI is necessary. Therefore in the coming years, EI is an essential skill that all should have to learn.

If we are emotionally intelligent we can face challenges, can think critically and so we become more confident.

There are six universal emotions Happy, sad, Disgust,  fear, surprise and angry in which all have same facial expressions.

We should understand our emotions as well as of others to.

There are five domains of Emotional intelligence which are categorized between intrapersonal and interpersonal.,  4. Empathy  5. Social Skills

  1. Self-awareness- We should be self-aware of our emotions so that we should know what we are doing or why we are doing it. To be more Self-aware we should follow Mindfulness (meditaion, walking and listening)
  2. Self-regulation – We should not flow through our emotions. We should be enough mindful and strong enough to regulate our emotions. Mindful listening, Meditation, and mindful walking will help us to regulate our emotions.

Our worries should be healthy so that we should plan beforehand to tackle them,.

3.Self Motivations- In which we learned about three types of Happiness-

Pleasure, Passion and purpose.

In Vardan sir’s session, we got more insights about Pleasure, passions and Purpose. It is difficult to differentiate between pleasure and passion. We get pleasure from small things we do or get but for passion, we need to take out the time and put effort into it.

Sometimes our Passion doesn’t incline with our purpose. So it is good if we make small small goals and then achieve our big purpose of life.

We are the only ones who can make us happy.

IKIGAI – Four Quadrants activity helped to identify our passion, liking, love and Purpose of our life.

As we are working in the organization so it is essential to create a positive environment and be mindful there so all should understand each other, improve their performance, increase their well-being and live a happy life at the workplace as well as personally.

This way the four days of life class were very fruitful for me.

Reflection of Emotional Intelligence (LC)

It is an opportunity to be a part of life class at Fountainhead school. It was very interesting to learn the science behind our emotional reactions and the term ‘Amygdala Hijack’. Earlier, I had an idea of Emotional Intelligence and its benefits but, after attending the Life Class, I found the big idea and also many more connected benefits. To explain further, Emotional Intelligence is a wide term, it became easier to learn it in small chunks such as self-awareness, self-regulation, and self-motivation. I learned that one needs to find purpose behind each action or activity he/she does in his/her life. Generally, I am not the kind of person who thinks this deeply in any situation. We should be mindful of our actions. The video of Ikigai was inspirational, I found it a very simple method to find one’s life goal.

Vardan Sir’s session of 3 P’s Pleasure, Passion, and Purpose made one thing clear if our passion connects to some purpose, it becomes meaningful and worth the time spent on it.

Though it is easy to talk about things it is very difficult or needs a lot of effort to apply in real life. I was able to analyze and identify my life goal. The interactive participants and the mindful facilitators made all the sessions more engrossing and engaging.

Thanks to all.

Emotional Intelligence

Finally, I am able to connect the dots. Understanding why one needs emotional intelligence and how does the brain function was insightful. I could see where I stand in terms of EI and which is the domain I need to work upon. The various techniques/ strategies shared by Ritu and Pinky Madam deemed to be helpful.
The initial 2 sessions were all about identifying the purpose of EI and today we discussed upon purpose of life, my IKIGAI.
Session by Vardan Sir helped me introspect upon the 3 P’s of happiness viz., pleasure, passion and purpose. I could narrow down my thought process and figure out few strategies which, if practiced, might help me in becoming emotionally intelligent. The participants and sessions are interactive. Both the facilitators ensure that they bridge the gap in understanding before moving ahead. Looking forward to learn other techniques to equip myself and be ready to face challenges in this VUCA world.
