हमने तो जब कलियाँ माँगी काँटों का हार मिला

BEWARE; You may expect Critical thinking to be fun, but it has it’s own way of making FUN of YOU. You’ll begin questing like…

“What’s the point 🙂 ” instead of  “What’s the Point 🙁 “

Self Awareness, Implicit bias, confirmation bias and there is whole list of cognitive bias….heavy words (Which is even difficult for me to remember; so I am going to stick to “Bias) what and what not, But a SERIOUS FUN.

Above all, It was Aman and Shraddha who made it easier to eat, chew and digest; Helped keep all useful and remove unwanted. Kudos to both of you for being their in the journey of Critical thinking otherwise I would have been in CRITICAL CONDITION, literary

A journey towards the shore

We are almost towards the end of the journey of critical thinking. We sailed through the waves of different biases through research and discussions. I was never knowing what unconscious bias I was using in my comments until I saw the video in my session which showed the real side of me.  The story of the lion and the boy who removed the thorn from the lion`s foot was an eye opener. We all need to look for the thorn we are carrying. No doubt we have done 7 habits, love class, Integrity, and then Critical thinking but every time when we Introspect we discover something new in us which we were missing out and this is the turning point of our life.

Looking forward to a wonderful and knowledgeable guest speaker session by an in-demand speaker for the last day of the life class.

Critical thinking – My journey

Critical thinking

Critical Thining – My Take Aways

I don’t know whether my critical thinking has improved or not but my research skills are better nowadays for sure! 🙂

A lot of sharing and group tasks helped me to look at different perspectives.

The most important learning from today’s session was to know ourselves and to know our thorns. It is very challenging to dig deep within ourselves to find out the things that are causing pain. And it is even more difficult to overcome them.

But yes, awareness is always the first step! So thank you Aman Sir and Shradha ma’am for all your hard work in planning and conducting the sessions!

Critical Thinking Sessions: A journey worth remembering!!

We have reached almost the end of the journey for our Critical Thinking sessions. I got exposure to a lot of things, some of which I already was aware of but didn’t have a name for it and some things were new as well. But, one thought that still lingers with me is, like there isn’t black or white in everything and more of a grey, similarly we have to be mindful and balance critical thinking else it will turn into overthinking without us realizing it. The mindful and elaborate discussions on implicit bias or being self aware will stay with me. I am slightly more aware of my biases or the so called ‘thorns and pains’ in my life, but I’ll definitely need more time and conscious efforts to find ‘Adrocles’ in me. These sessions, discussions and the variety of perspectives that we get to hear during the discussions, definitely helps in building a better understanding of things around us and widens our horizon thereby making us a better person.

A ‘Critical’ Journey…

So when I decided to join ‘Critical Thinking’, I was really skeptical as to what the sessions will entail. But then, all my paradigms about these sessions were broken on the very first day. All the sessions till now have been highly informative and they have been huge ‘eye and mind openers’… 😛

I am really enjoying these sessions and have surprisingly started applying it to my routine life. There are discussions happening on a wide range of topics, especially the controversial ones! The session on the various biases was so relatable and made me really look into myself as person and how I can make myself better. Now, if i want to buy something or make a decision, every single time I try to apply critical thinking in that situation rather than acting upon my biases. It was a tough thing to ‘murder my darling’, but I was so proud of myself when I could say it out loud! It really upgrades your thought process and leads you in the right way.

Looking forward to more of these sessions and hope they are equally interactive!🤞🏼

My journey of Critical thinking life class

Is Critical thinking essential? Do I need to use it everywhere? Do I tend to confirm my beliefs by finding bias information? How biases are influencing my preferences and my decision making and so on.. In the last few sessions of Critical thinking life class, I’ve pondered on social and personal aspects of my life. Becoming aware of biases doesn’t actually make you any less susceptible to them. You become more aware of the bias blind spot, which is our inclination towards identifying how biases affect others, while simultaneously maintaining an inability to recognize how our own judgement is affected by biases. Becoming more open to multiple perspectives. In other words, educating ourselves about biases does not mean we can use this knowledge as a lens granting us unwavering vigilance for all the biases out there which may affect us.
Definitely, it is essential to know where to apply and where critical thinking is not needed. It can’t be applied in all the situations but important life skill to develop to have a broader view and looking from multiple lenses/factors.
Being a rational being, humans have the power of reasoning and can find the truth on the basis of personal experiences or evidences which are from reliable and credible sources. Knowing how we know, what we know, challenging the thought process by finding disconfirming evidence for the claims made. Thus getting a wholesome view and then analysing it in order to make informed decisions in life. Enhancing critical thinking skills is a lifelong learning journey.
Overall I’ve enjoyed the past few sessions. Thanks to all the participants and facilitators for the enriching journey.

Critical Thinking: A new lens to look at same life.

Well! The journey from Emotional Intelligence to Critical Thinking feels like a balance we carry where both sides are filled with various thoughts and we have to balance the scale by applying our EI + CT and take the right decision and make the right choices. Where EI helped us to take the right pause at the right time and not to let the trigger shoot our emotions and flow them off at the same time CT enables us to see beyond, not judge, cultural norms, and learn how to understand other factors that can influence our decision-making.

We often don’t notice the importance of critical thinking in everyday life. Every day we all make decisions that affect ourselves, our families, our country, and our world. But with these sessions, I understood how our brains are somewhere trapped by confirmation bias and cognitive bias which may hinder us from taking the right actions and reactions.

It was great learning so far and I am looking forward to more such wonderful learnings.

Our brain is just amazing!

Our brain is just amazing, provided we give our actions and our thoughts, a critical consideration! Isn’t it?

Well, did you know that your mind is like a gearbox, though with two gears only? Yes, that’s true! Operating from System 1 or System 2. While the first one relates to your impulses, your immediate reactions even animal urges (if I can put it in a not-so-polite way). Something like you reached home from work in your thoughts and reaching your door-step you wonder, “How did I reach? I don’t even remember what I saw on my way?” that was your system 1 guiding you. Your system 2 allows you to prove that Yes! You are human. Thoughtful computation, careful efforts, deliberate practice and consciousness in the action. Here, you are not just reacting, you are responding. When you respond, “Hold on a second, let me think this through.” You are in your gear 2, I mean system 2.

We say that every child is different, well our minds are different too. So, one may see an ace of spade, another may see a floral design! Of course, both the minds are right, they are looking at a member of a deck of cards. This is about perspectives. When you want to give critical thought to something, you likely want to look at the matter from all the different angles. In fact, you may also want to be open-minded to other people’s perspective. However, that’s going to be debatable and why not? We are doing critical thinking.

While your beautiful brain is smarting out for being smart, psychiatrists have given an endless list of ‘cognitive biases’ – a systemic error in your thinking for all the worldly reasons. When you thought your husband left a wet towel on the bed, just to tease you, you might be experiencing intentionality bias or when your parents just do not wish to visit the doctor with a variety of excuse, they might have an ostrich effect going on. In a way, hiding away from reality.

And finally, when you learn to be a critical thinker, this is what you do – “Murder your darling.” That’s what we did, we deliberately researched, keeping our confirmation biases aside, about the true picture of our favourite product or a brand. Something like looking at the flip side of the coin. A side that you are most likely not going to like. In between of these, we debated on China and Covid-19 and gave our opinions on politics (not so the favourite subject of mine). At the end of Day 3, we halted at culture and critical thinking.

Take away from critical thinking classes!

Critical thinking is the ability to think critically and rationally about what to do and what to believe. These workshops  helped me to think objectively. “The Debate  and Murder your darling! was something that intrigued me!” Thinking about our cognitive bias, critical thinking, and values of our traditions. It was an enriching experience. It is not only expanding our reach, but also developing our learning skills. I look forward to more informative sessions.

Thank you Aman sir and Shraddha maam
