Emotional Intelligence & People Management – My Learning Journey

The two-day Emotional Intelligence and People Management Life Class was a valuable learning experience. It helped me understand how our emotions influence our thoughts, actions, and the way we interact with others.

One of the most meaningful concepts I learned was Amygdala Hijack. I realised that when emotions take over, we often react without thinking. Taking a short pause allows us to stay calm, think clearly, and respond more effectively.

The session also highlighted the importance of self-awareness, empathy, and active listening. I learned that good leadership is not only about guiding others but also about managing our own emotions and behaviour. The SBI (Situation–Behaviour–Impact) feedback model showed me how to provide constructive feedback in a respectful and positive way.

These sessions reminded me that emotional intelligence is a skill we develop through daily practice. By staying calm, listening carefully, and responding thoughtfully, we can build stronger relationships and become better colleagues, educators, and leaders.

My Biggest Takeaway

Great leadership begins with self-management. A small pause before responding can make a big difference.
