Emotional Intelligence & People Management – Key Learnings

In my 2-day learning class on Emotional Intelligence and People Management, I gained valuable insights into how our emotions, responses and leadership behaviours can impact the people around us.

  • Amygdala Hijack: Learnt how our amygdala can take over when it senses danger, leading us to react rather than respond. Pausing is key — by stepping away for a few minutes or even counting 100 to 1, we give our brain time to think logically before responding.
  • Qualities of a Great Leader: A great leader needs the courage to stand up for the team, empathy to understand people, and the ability to challenge team members so they can grow. Self-awareness is equally important — understanding our own triggers helps us regulate ourselves and create a safe space for the team.
  • SBI Feedback Framework: Learnt to structure feedback around Situation, Behaviour and Impact. This helps us focus on specific actions rather than labelling people, making feedback clearer, objective and more constructive.
  • VUCA World: Understood that we operate in a Volatile, Uncertain, Complex and Ambiguous world. In such an unpredictable environment, being self-aware and regulating our emotions becomes essential to making better decisions and supporting our teams.

Overall, the two days reinforced that effective leadership begins with managing ourselves before managing others..
